My Code of Ethics
Living on the road and spending most of my time in nature like most things in life is a balance. Balancing wanting to get beautiful images with respecting my environment and all that may be harmed while I pursue these images. While observing others and discussing the impact people have on our environment with other Photographers (which I respect immensely), I decided to write out and live by my own code of ethics while pursuing this line of work.
1. Respect for Wildlife: I will Always prioritize the well-being of the natural subjects. Avoid causing undue stress, harm, or disturbance to wildlife. I will not bait, trap, or harass animals for a photograph.
2. Environmental Stewardship: I will do my best to minimize impact on the environment. Follow Leave No Trace principles when working in natural areas, and will be cautious not to damage fragile ecosystems.
3. Non-Intrusive Techniques: I use telephoto lenses, camouflage, and other non-invasive methods to capture images from a safe and respectful distance. I do not infringe on the natural behavior of wildlife.
4. Accuracy and Authenticity: I represent the natural world truthfully and accurately. I do not stage or manipulate scenes with wildlife to deceive or mislead the viewer.
5. Conservation Advocacy: I will use my work to raise awareness about conservation issues and the importance of protecting the environment and wildlife. I support organizations and causes that work towards these goals.
6. Respect for No-Go Zones: I Adhere to designated no-entry or restricted areas to protect sensitive habitats and nesting sites. Comply with all Federal, State, and Park regulations, laws, and guidelines.
7. Invasive Species: I do not introduce or spread invasive species. I clean and maintain my equipment to prevent the transport of seeds or organisms to new locations.
8. Feeding or Baiting Wildlife: I do not feed or bait wildlife for photography.
9. Zoo or Game Farms: All the wildlife I shoot is wild. I do not shoot confined animals at a Zoo, "Wildlife Sanctuary" or Game Farm.
10. Scientific Collaboration: I collaborate with researchers and scientists when possible to contribute to the understanding and conservation of wildlife and ecosystems.
11. Cultural Sensitivity: When working in areas with indigenous or local communities, I respect their customs, land, and cultural sensitivities. I seek permission and build positive relationships.
12. Avoid Disturbance to Nesting Sites: I do not disturb nesting birds or other animals during their breeding season. Prioritize the protection of these vulnerable periods.
13. Reporting Poaching or Illegal Activity: I will report any wildlife poaching, illegal logging, or other unlawful activities I encounter while working in the field.
14. Respect for Other Photographers: I will be considerate and respectful of other nature and wildlife photographers, sharing locations responsibly and not compromising the safety of subjects or habitats.
15. Accountability: I take responsibility for the ethical consequences of my work, especially if it impacts the behavior or safety of wildlife. I am prepared to address concerns and criticisms professionally.
In addition to my own Code of Ethics I am a member of Nature First and follow the principles held by this organization.
